Meet the Team

Benjamin Stewart
“BJ” is a proud US Army veteran, having served his country in both Afghanistan and Iraq. From the age of 16, BJ has said that he would follow in the footsteps of a beloved older cousin who owns a mortuary business in Albuquerque, NM. After completing his military service, BJ returned to El Paso, Texas to complete his education. He is an avid cyclist and was struck by an SUV while riding his bike in 2004. Miraculously his life was spared and he graduated from New Mexico State University in May 2010. BJ believes he was spared so that he could serve families who suffer the loss of a loved one.

David Stewart
David’s passion is to seek out vendors who will meet the needs of users in a timely, compassionate and cost-effective way. He is particularly passionate about finding vendors within each community who will treat our clients—their neighbors—with the respect and dignity they deserve at a time of loss.

Brian Beaman
Brian enjoys helping others, especially in the area of personal finance – saving for emergencies, getting out of debt and saving for the future. Shared Sorrows allows him to help people in a time of loss and often money is a big concern. Brian is an avid sports fan and enjoys outdoor activities especially those that get him back to his home state of Colorado. Brian has been married to Denise for over 15 years and they have 3 wonderful sons. They reside in the Nashville, TN area.

Shayla Cody
Shayla is a software developer and project manager, and also serves as a chaplain in her community and online. Because of her own painful experience of the loss of her mother when she was a teenager, she is passionate about helping people through the difficult journey of planning a funeral and the grieving process. She grew up in El Paso, Texas, and now lives near the Connecticut shoreline with her incredibly talented husband Mark of over 16 years, two amazing teenage children, and her dog, a very spoiled chocolate lab. She also sings, and plays the piano and clarinet every chance she gets.

James Stewart
James cares deeply for those who grieve. Having cared for several elderly relatives in their final hours, living through the untimely death of a brother and family friend who was a young student as well as the agony of the suicide of another young friend, James greatly assisted in the development of SharedSorrows developed to meet the needs of those who are walking the path of grief. James has been married to Anne for over 30 years and they are the proud parents of three sons and one daughter — and one sweet granddaughter.
